Norman Bugg

Lieutenant Commander Norman Bugg has passed away from natural causes in his 90th year of life. Norman was born on March 17, 1929 in Canton, OH and passed away on September 30, 2018 in Albuquerque, NM. 
Norman was a resident of Blanding and Monticello as a youth and kept close ties to the community throughout his life.  He owns a large property near Dodge Point, south of Monticello, called the “Lady Bugg Ranch.” 
He and his wife, Joyce, have been long-time subscribers and avid readers of the San Juan Record.  They still have many friends in Monticello and Blanding. 
Norman served a 28-year career in the United States Navy where he enlisted as a sailor, worked his way up the ranks, and retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1975 (to accomplish this career trajectory is very uncommon). 
He then settled down in his adopted hometown of Albuquerque where he bought and operated the Monterey Motel near Old Town for over 25 years.
He first came to Albuquerque in 1952 where he was assigned to Sandia Base to learn about top-secret nuclear warfare for the US Navy.
He fell in love with New Mexico and his future wife, Joyce Puthoff, and married her in 1954. His Navy career would take him all over the world where he served in the Korean War and served two tours in Vietnam.
He is survived by his wife Joyce Bugg of Albuquerque; brother Billy Bugg of Florida; children Matthew (Joy) Bugg of La Quinta, CA, and Nathan Bugg, Patrick Bugg, and Kimberly Bugg Sanchez, all of Albuquerque.
He is survived by grandchildren Julianne Bugg (Gabriel) Apodaca of West Point, NY; Tara Bugg (Curtis) Hinchen of Indio, CA; Andrew Bugg of Albuquerque; Darcie (Alex) Cotton of Bermuda Dunes, CA; Leslie Bugg of Denver, CO; and Jared Bugg, Jason Bugg, and Andrew Bugg, all of Albuquerque. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on October 20, 2018 with a viewing beginning at 9:30 a.m. and funeral service at 11 a.m. at the Montano Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
A Graveside Military Service will be held at Sunset Memorial Park immediately following the church service.
