Mary Martinez Vigil

August 28, 1929 ~ May 4, 2010
Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Mary Martinez Vigil, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at San Juan Hospital in Monticello, UT.
She was born August 28, 1929 in Parkview, NM to Andronico and Estefanita Martinez. At the age of 17, she moved to Durango, CO and began her career as a Nurse’s Aid at the local hospital.
She met and married Isaac Vigil Sr. on August 30, 1948. They made their home in Monticello, where they raised seven children. They opened their home to many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren
Mom worked for the San Juan Hospital for 38 years and retired in 2003. Mom enjoyed caring for all the patients at the hospital, but she especially loved attending to the infants and children during their stay in the hospital. She also enjoyed working with the swing bed residents. The family has been told by many residents of San Juan County about the tender, loving care she gave them during their stay at the hospital.
Mom was a social butterfly. She loved to dance, crochet, clean (many times until 3:00 a.m.) and she could out shop any of us.
She also spent many nights staying up until the wee hours of the morning with her grandchildren and their overnight guests, laughing, telling stories not wanting to go to bed as she didn’t want to miss any of the fun.
Mom is survived by her children: Fana (Ray Arballo), Gen (Arnold Atencio), Belinda (Steven Nielson), Isaac Jr. (Shauna) Robert – all of Monticello, UT; Joe (Marlene) of Portland OR., 21 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson.
Mom is preceded in death by her parents, husband Isaac Vigil Sr., brother Claude Martinez and daughter Anita.

Her family wishes to thank the community for their outpouring of love and support. Thanks for flowers, cards, donations, food and your prayers.
