Kennard Powell Black, Sr.

August 28, 1929 ~ December 15, 2015
Kennard Powell Black, Sr. passed away December 15, 2015. He was born on August 28, 1929 in Cortez, CO because, as he often stated, “That’s where his mother was.”
He is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Jean L. Black; three children, Ken Jr., Kerrilyn Black Chesley and Ron Black.
He has nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom love him.
Kennard was raised in Blanding, UT. In the fall of 1948, as the Korean Conflict was beginning to simmer, he joined the U.S. Navy and served as a technician, stationed at the airbase in El Centro, CA.
It was while in the navy he married his wife, Jean.
Upon his discharge from the service, Kennard used the GI Bill to attend the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, graduating with a degree in electrical engineering.
In 1957, he moved his young family to Scottsdale, AZ where Motorola employed him at their GED plant at Granite Reef and McDowell. He worked for ‘Mother M’ (his words) until he retired in 1994.
While working at Motorola, he was very active in their Toastmasters Club.
Upon retirement Kennard and Jean split their time between Scottsdale and the White Mountains of Arizona, later moving to Florence, summering in Show Low.
In 1999-2000, Kennard and Jean served an 18-month mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Jackson, Mississippi Mission.
Kennard spent his last years watching Fox News, reading, and enjoying his family and grandchildren.
He will be missed for his counsel and sense of humor. He dispensed both right up until he left to return home to our Heavenly Father.
