Gray Wangelin
August 21, 1930 ~ September 30, 2012
Gray Wangelin, 82, departed this life on Sunday, September 30, in his home in Monticello after courageously fighting brain cancer. He was born August 21, 1930 to Christian and Etha Wangelin in Oroville, CA.
He learned to fly from his crop dusting flying instructor and received his pilots license when he was 16.
He graduated from the University of Alaska, College of Civil Engineering.
Gray enjoyed his career as a bridge engineer for 50 years, working in Kansas City, Phoenix, Alaska, and Malaysia.
Gray’s first love was restoring old airplanes and flying them cross country. He received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award in recognition of his 65 years of safe aircraft operations.
He loved riding his Harley Davidson with his two sons. Other interest included photography, hiking, camping reading and road trips with his wife.
Gray is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; two sons, Chip (Barb) of Pocatello, ID and Cary (Yang) Wichita, Kansas; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial is tentatively planned for Friday, October 5 in Monticello.
