Georgan Hurst Burtenshaw

Georgan Hurst Burtenshaw, 93, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, passed away quietly at 10 a.m., Sunday, April 13, 2014, in Salt Lake City, UT, nestled in the arms of her daughter.
She was born on October 18, 1920, delivered in a #3 galvanized tub by a midwife, the second of three daughters born to George Arthur Hurst, Jr., and Lona Porter Hurst of Blanding, UT.
They later adopted a son, Ray Burtenshaw, who worked for and lived with the Hursts. His older brother, Horace Ralph Burtenshaw, would come to visit him, fell in love with Georgan, and they were married on July 20, 1938, in the Manti, UT Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
To this union were born six children; Rosemarr (Hugh E.) Greathouse; Deanne (S.D.) Stevens; Trudy (Sam) Cox; Terri (Bill) Gordon; Stephen Hurst (Letha) Burtenshaw; and Arthur Ralph (Debbie) Burtenshaw.
Georgan’s husband and four of their children precede her in death.
As of April, 2014, Georgan has 35 grandchildren, 80 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren and one on the way. She adored them all and remembered all names, spellings, places of birth and birthdays!
She was known as “Granny B.” by young and old throughout San Juan County and beyond. She loved to entertain with her stories, poems limericks, puns and innumerable songs.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, playing the piano (by ear), harmonica, violin, calling square-dances, teaching line dancing, and driving her Jeep Cherokee all over Utah.
She was also very involved and dedicated to her church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding many leadership and teaching positions in the various auxiliaries. She often said that her testimony was her most prized possession, and proudy shared it freely with others,
Georgan loved all sports, especially basketball and football. She was especially proud of the San Juan teams, and was their biggest fan. She called the Utah Jazz her team and would schedule her days around their games.
Georgan loved music, sang to her children and taught them to sing in harmony, supported their taking piano lessons, and practicing their band instruments. She knew a song for EVERYTHING. or made one up. She always had a song in her heart.
She is survived by her younger sister, DalMarr Hellstrom, 91, and two daughters, Rosemarr Greathouse, 74, and Trudy Cox, 69.
She was truly the matriarch of her large and loving posterity
She was a living legend, and we will miss her dearly. We wish to thank everyone for their kind thoughts, good wishes and heartfelt remembrances.
The funeral services were held April 18, 2014 in Blanding. Interment at the Blanding Cemetery in the family plot.
