Preliminary election results include approximately 20% of total ballots cast in San Juan County

Preliminary results are in for the November 3 general election in San Juan County, but the figures include just a fraction of the total votes cast.

Less than 1,000 ballots have been counted as of Tuesday evening and election officials state that it will be "several days" before final results are available. This represents about 20% of the votes cast.

The vote totals represent approximately 30% of the estimated 2,500 mailed-in ballots that have been received.

In addition, none of the estimated 1,000 ballots that were cast on election day have been counted.

Finally, there are approximately 250 provisional ballots that may be counted in coming days... if they are determined to be legitimate.

Preliminary results in San Juan County show:

San Juan County Commission #2:
Republican incumbent Silvia Stubbs with 78 votes

Other results will be released in the future.

The November 3 general election was hit with a series of challenges, beginning with unprecedented flooding across major portions of the county. The State of Utah issued a notice of emergency election accommodations on November 2 and sent notifications to voters. Electronic ballots were approved for approximately 50 voters who were impacted by the flooding. The notification sent to voters contained a number of confusing statements, including a deadline that had passed several hours before the emails had been sent. Compounding the challenges was the unexpected sickness in the elections office which sidelined a key member of the election staff.
