Last print issue of the San Juan Record

Thank you for your support of local journalism through the San Juan Record.  For exactly 111 years, the hometown newspaper for San Juan County has not missed a week covering the events in our corner of the world.  
However, the time has come and we are moving forward with a number of significant changes at the San Juan Record.
After this issue of the paper comes off the press, we will no longer produce a print version of the paper.  However, we will continue to cover the news through the sjrnews.com website, and expand our coverage of the news on Redrock92 and Redrock92.com.
Discontinuing the print version is a painful decision, but we are hopeful the change will actually increase our distribution of news.  
The vast majority of our readers are already online and this will allow us to focus on the website and radio.
The San Juan Record website, at sjrnews.com, reaches readers near and far. As an example, there were more than half a million visitors to the website in July alone, totaling nearly 4 million “hits”.  Our goal is for sjrnews.com to be a one-stop landing spot for everything to San Juan County.
We are in the process of making a significant upgrade to our website and will expand the outreach to subscribers through newsletters and breaking news alerts. The website will be updated every day, rather than weekly.
Subscribers to the San Juan Record will continue to receive a weekly summary of the news, just as they have every week for the past 111 years. However, the newsletter will be delivered to readers via email rather than through print.
We will continue to cover San Juan County, but hopefully in an expanded role. This includes our coverage of local governments, high school sports, obituaries, events, and more. The San Juan Record will continue to be a great place to learn.
We already have email contact each week for the majority of our subscribers. We will be reaching out to the others and hope that they will be served as well by email and online news as they have been for printed news.
We are excited for the change, but realize that there will be challenges as we make the transition. We certainly recognize that it is very difficult to see the print version go away!
It has been a brutal decision to make. However, unfortunately, it is increasingly difficult to produce and deliver a print issue of the paper in our isolated corner of the world. We print each week in Santa Fe, NM and face increasing transportation, printing, postage and distribution costs. 
Compounding the challenge is the limited space for news that can be included in a print issue. Difficult decisions and painful edits were required as we had to choose which stories and photos we have room to run each week.  
We will have significantly more news on the website than we were ever able to fit in the print version. It represents a dramatic increase in information for readers.
We will also load all stories to the sjrnews.com website, rather than the relatively few stories that made it to print. Our social media sites will also provide
We encourage contributions from San Juan County residents.
The hope is to speed up delivery of news, increase our coverage of the area, and build readership across the board.  
In this day and age, people need to be informed quickly and directly, and an online model is the best way to do that. Printing a paper once a week and shipping it hundreds of miles simply doesn’t work any more.

With daily updates of the website and periodic email updates of breaking news, readers will know the news as it happens, instead of reading about it a week late!  Combined with our regional reach on Redrock92 FM and RedRock92.com, we can deliver news to a large population in our area.
