Head Coach Mike Bowers: “Averie Gilson is a four-year starter for San Juan Softball. Each year she improved and in the end was a rock-star shortstop. Her state performance was off the charts. Averie is a student of the game, she loves to learn and grow, and she produced phenomenal numbers.
“Her season started a little slow which normally causes emotional breakdowns and lack of productivity. However, her grit and tenacity prevailed.
“Averie is the epitome of what the great John Wooden always said: “Players and teams must avoid the peaks and valleys of competition.”
That means players should never get too high or low emotionally during competition.
“I am so proud of Averie’s even-keeled play. She is the model teammate and a very selfless player. It will be hard to replicate what she has accomplished for our program.”
