Treydon Harris wins second-straight title, Buckaroo wrestlers finish fifth at state tournament

The Monticello Buckaroo Wrestlers closed out their season at the 2023 1A Utah State Wrestling Tournament in Richfield this past Friday and Saturday, February 10-11.
The Buckaroos got a solid performance from all their athletes, finishing fifth as a team at the event. Senior Treydon Harris led the team, making his way to the top of the podium for the second straight year.
With the title he adds his name to the list of two-time state champions on the Buckaroo Wall of Fame. Harris dominated his opponents on his way to the featured match, winning both early-round matches by fall in the first period.
In the finals he faced Trexdon Spaulding of Milford. Harris scored the first takedown but Spaulding came back to score five points and take the lead into the second period.
Harris fought back in the second and third and was down by one when he turned Spaulding and scored the win by fall with less than a minute remaining in the match.
Senior Javlin Robison also battled his way to the championship match, winning with a strong 18-3 technical fall in round one and winning by third-period fall in round two.
In the finals, Robison took on Brayden Webb of Altamont and fought hard in the loss, earning a well-deserved second-place finish.
Brothers Josh and Tyson Wheeler earned third-place medals for the Buckaroos. Josh Wheeler earned a second-period win by fall in round one before a tough 10-7 loss in the semifinal round.
Wheeler battled back to earn a first-period win by fall and earn a spot in the consolation finals where he won 8-2. Tyson Wheeler lost a close 8-5 match in round one but came back with a third-period win by fall and an 11-5 victory to earn his spot in the consolation finals.
He faced Ronan Mooney of Panguitch who had defeated him in the first round of the tournament. This time Wheeler came with something to prove and earned a win by fall in the second period.
Finishing with a fourth-place medal was Thomas Fullmer who earned an 8-3 win in round one. Following a loss in the semifinal round, he battled back with a 6-0 win. Fullmer fought hard but was defeated in the consolation finals.
Also earning wins for the Buckaroos at the tournament were Landon Shumway, Ronnie Harris, Zac Thayn, Chandler Henderson, and Tavon Black – all by fall.  Also competing hard for the Buckaroos was Camren Carpenter.
