John S. (Jack) King

Geology professor, loved San Juan County
On March 15, 2013, at the age of 85, John S. King (Jack) of the Town of Tonawanda, NY and Monticello, UT, passed away. He is the son of the late Roy King and Ramona Lane King.
Jack was a professor of geology at the University of Buffalo for 33 years and directed their Geology Summer Field Camp for 27 years. He worked with NASA on Mars and Mercury mapping projects and directed a NASA intern program for over 20 years.
He was captivated by the landscape, lifestyle and beauty of Utah, leading him to create his summer sanctuary on his land in Utah.
He enjoyed photography, painting, and studying the geology out West – always with a dog at his side.
Jack is survived by his nephew Douglas Cherkauer, and niece Deborah Hamond.
