Newspapers Rock! 10K

An enthusiastic group of racers completed the third annual Newspapers Rock 10K race under perfect conditions on October 10 in Indian Creek Canyon.

The race, sponsored by the San Juan Record, wends its way through the spectacular canyon in the height of the fall colors. The race begins at Newspaper Rock and finishes at the Dugout Ranch.

Seventy eight runners participated in the race, with the top positions claimed by Ryan Heck of Blanding and Jennifer Hughes of Woodland Hills, UT. Heck’s winning time over the 6.2 mile race course is 38:41, while Hughes crossed the line in 39:30.

Steve Francom of Blanding claimed the first place time in the men’s age 42 and up category with a time of 39:12. Mark Endres of Blanding is second and Kurt Kause of Moab is third in the age category.

Josh Nielson of Blanding is first in the men’s 31 to 41 age category in a time of 39:28. Kevin Stock of Monticello is second and Robert Hess of Blanding is third.

Daniel Lay of Richfield, UT claimed the top spot in the men’s under 31 category in 39:50. Cody Randall of Monticello is second, followed by 14-year-old Austin Endres of Blanding in third.

Lynette Bowers of Draper, UT claimed the top spot in the women’s under 31 category in 44:24. Bowers is also the first of the eight Mantz family members to cross the finish line. Summer Wilcox of Monticello is second in the age category and Trisdan Fausett of Albuquerque, NM is third.

Dianna Nielson of Monticello finished at the top of the women’s 31 to 41 age category in 46:09. Emily Washburn of Monticello is second and Aleigh Redd of Monticello is third.

Michelle Adams of Blanding finished first in the women’s age 42 and up category in 49:59. Tina Murdock of Monticello is second and LeaAnn Nielson of Monticello is third.

The youngest runner is twelve-year-old Carsyn Endres and the oldest runner is Paul Mantz, who is over twelve years old.

A large group of volunteers help run the event, which has nearly tripled in size over three years. The San Juan Record staff, led by race director Scott Burton and including Andrea Montgomery and Melissa Shakespeare, was helped by the crew at Abajo Recreation, Joseph Carr and Ed Larson. Other help came from Suzanne Duke; Lynda Boyle; Haley Burton; Anna Thayn; Carol Van Steeter; Heidi Redd; Camille Rowley; the Boyle, Burton and Fausett kids; and the too kind and loving Dee Torres.

The Utah Highway Patrol, Utah Department of Transportation, Indian Creek Cattle Company, Bureau of Land Management, Blue Mountain Foods, City of Monticello, Monticello High School cross country and Canyonlands Natural History Association also provide invaluable assistance.

The 2010 race will take place on October 9.
