Newspaper readers across the country (and globe)

Newspaper readers by the millions have received an insert in recent weeks with an advertisement touting San Juan County. The advertisement, reprinted below, has reached an estimated 6.5 million readers in the past two weeks.

The advertising is just a part of the marketing push that has helped to increase visitation to San Juan County by eleven percent in 2007.

Readers received the insert in the Sunday newspaper in a host of areas around the United States, including the Denver Post, Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register, Las Vegas Review, San Joe Mercury News and San Francisco Chronicle.

In addition, the insert has been included in Sunday papers in Boston, MA, New York City, NY, Chicago, IL, Austin, TX, Albuquerque, NM, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR.

The insert is focused on visitation to Utah and includes features on areas around the state. One half of the expense for the San Juan County ad was paid by funds provided by the State of Utah tourism office.

The tourism office reports that they have received a number of calls and internet hits on the county website, likely as a result of the ad.

The San Juan County ad is also included in international publications focused on the general population and on industry professionals. These include the International Vacation Guide distributed throughout Europe and the Discover America and Spirit of the West magazine distributed in Germany.

San Juan County Visitor Services director Charlie DeLorme said that San Juan County has been promoted heavily in the United States and beyond. With a weak dollar, the United States is a very popular destination for international visitors, who love the wide open vistas of San Juan County.

DeLorme recently attended an international trade show in London as a member of the Utah delegation. He reports that the United Kingdom equivalent of National Geographic, simply titled Geographic, will feature the Four Corners area in future issues. In addition, the region will host a series of cultural tours beginning in 2009.

DeLorme reports that the Red Bull Air Race Series, which brought unprecedented exposure to San Juan County in 2007, may possibly return to Monument Valley in 2009 or 2010.
