Navajo Mountain High School hosts first Homecoming celebration

As a part of the year-long celebration of the 10th anniversary of the opening of Navajo Mountain High School, the school hosted a homecoming celebration on Friday, October 9.

The school is located in the isolated southwestern corner of San Juan County. Navajo Mountain has been called the most remote chapter in the Navajo Nation and one of the most remote communities in the lower 48 states.

It seemed that the entire community was either in the parade or lining the parade route from Navajo Mountain Road past the NaaTsis’Aan Community School to the high school.

Nearly a dozen floats were in the parade, mostly from the high school, but also from the local Senior Citizens Center, the Community School and a Native Performing Arts Group from the Community School.

Fans turned out in force to support the NMHS volleyball team as they put in a good effort in matches against Monument Valley, although they were ultimately overpowered by the stronger Cougar team.

Finally, parents and students could all be seen dancing together with school staff, alumni and other community members that evening at a dance in the school cafeteria to round out the events of the day. Music was provided by John Bahe of Desert Mobile Sound.

Judging from the turnout and the response of those involved, a good time was had by all and everyone is looking forward to next year’s homecoming.
