More forest road closures
Many travelers face disruption because of road construction. In the back country of San Juan County in 2011, the major disruption is being caused by road closures, not road construction. As a result, the rhetoric is heating up and tempers are rising.
The US Forest Service has closed a number of stem roads that are traditionally used for camping. A Blanding family returned to their campsite to find the road to the site had been closed while they were away.
County officials have expressed concern that the Forest Service is using unpaid volunteers to close roads.
Concern is mounting that the closures will cause significant problems when the hunting seasons begin in August.
San Juan County Commissioners have authorized a letter of protest to the Forest Service regarding the closures and the procedures driving the process.
