Monticello manager resigns

Monticello City Manger Myron Lee submitted a letter of resignation to the city council on April 2. Lee said that he has accepted a new position in the St. George area and will start his new job on April 19. As a result, April 16 will be his last day at the helm in Monticello.
Lee leaves the city almost exactly after a two-year stay in Monticello. He started as city manger on March 31, 2008, replacing previous City Manager Trent Schafer, who had served for 14 years.
Lee came to the City of Monticello after working for several years as a public information officer for the Utah Department of Transportation. He has helped the city over a busy two-year period which saw a host of construction projects and a financial crisis.
The city is currently grappeling with a budget that apparently will require significant cuts. Decreases in sales tax collections, the loss of a resort city sales tax and the on-going challenges related to increasing costs all contribute to a cash crunch.
In his resignation letter, Lee said that he is willing to volunteer to assist the city in the budget process. The new budget will need to be approved before the fiscal year begins on July 1.
Lee said that it will be hard to leave Monticello but that he has a great opportunity in the St. George area. He said that he is leaving the city in good hands and feels that the city staff worked well as a team.
“I am happy to have been part of a lot of good changes in Monticello,” said Lee. “I couldn’t ask for a better team than the city staff.”
Projects that were completed or initiated while Lee was city manager include a new swimming pool, significant water and sewer infrastructure, the reconstruction of Main and Center streets, a new airport, and completion of the visitor center and water collection projects.
The Monticello City Council has not met since Lee’s resignation.
