Michael Martin

Write-in candidate for: Monticello City Council, 2 year term

Responsible Government
Our families and businesses are asked to live within a budget. Yet, when the city starts to live outside its means, they get to ask for more taxes or just raise them. I will work to have the city provide the basic services that a city should provide.

Instead of raising taxes when the city needs revenue, we need to start looking at alternatives and being creative about getting funds other than taxes. A business just can’t raise taxes or their rates. If they do, customers will go somewhere else. Competition is a concern that a government does not have, so they need to be more sensitive about them. Taxes should be looked at only as a last resort after all other avenues have been exhausted.

A More Business Friendly Environment
Local businesses need city government to explore existing codes and remove the ones that may hinder, be intrusive and prohibitive or have the city as a competitor. Businesses need to be able to do what they do best, and that is to succeed.

Instead of duplicating efforts already underway in the business sector, we need to support those that do economic development the best, such as the local chamber and other groups. In return we should see sales tax revenue go up instead of property taxes.

Better Communication
City government is accountable to the citizens for all that it does and to make sure that information is available. When you are in the process of serving the people who pay the bills, you need to let them know about everything that goes on. A better effort needs to be made to communicate what is happening within city government. It is our money they are spending, right?
