Logan Monson works as a nurse in San Juan County. He also sits on the Blanding City Council. Monson’s platform has six areas of focus, which include supporting the local economy, education, health care, transparency, an emphasis on small government, and public lands.
For Monson, small government is crucial in a rural place like San Juan County.
“I have no interest in being bought out by anything, by these big companies that come in and try to push an agenda onto small government … That doesn’t interest me at all,” he said.
Monson also discussed the local economy and how crucial it is to support small businesses, which contribute to the county’s wealth. He acknowledges the county’s financial status as the poorest in Utah and its limited private, taxable land. Monson emphasizes public lands in his platform to account for the issues ranchers, farmers and hunters face in the area.
In addition, education is a talking point for Monson since he comes from a family of teachers — his father, wife and father-in-law are all educators. He addresses the need to improve teacher retention rates, specifically in southern schools.
As a resident, Monson said he felt compelled to help the community he lives in and that he is “not looking to be a politician.”
“The people of San Juan County often times get overlooked and brushed by,” he said. “We don’t live in big cities, we live in rural [places].”
He believes better communication between residents, county, state and even federal officials could positively impact the area and that a narrative of division has affected the county for too long.
