Local drill teams compete at state final competitions
The Monticello and San Juan High School drill teams competed in the state championships on February 7 at Utah Valley University in Orem.
The Monticello High School Vaqueras finished third in the 1A classification. The team had a third place finish in each of the three events, military, jazz and kick.
The team had started the year hoping to match or improve upon their second place finish of last year.
However, the Vaqueras suffered through graduation and injury, and combined with a large group of incoming freshman, performed well to finish in third place.
Ten members of the 2014 squad were not on the floor for the 2015 state competition.
Members of the All-State squad for Monticello are Averi Christiansen and Mollie Anderson.
The drill team is led by Monique Christiansen with assistance from Sidney Young.
The San Juan Royals also had a great performance at the state meet, competing in the 2A classification. The Royals are led by Samantha Walker, who was the state champion in the drill down competition.
The event tests the precision skills of each participant, with the number of participants whittled down as they compete. Walker was the last one standing and claimed the title.
The Royals are led by Amber Black, with the assistance of Jeanna Grover and Camie McPherson.
