Local students compete in USU Eastern art show

More than 150 art students from the San Juan School District competed with 163 entries in the 2019 art show hosted by Utah State University – Blanding Campus. 
Recognizing the arts play a major role in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the campus welcomed the artistic addition to their annual STEAM Expo.
Monument Valley and Whitehorse scholars also contributed cloud (science) and probability (mathematics) paintings.
San Juan School District teachers Lee Burningham (Albert R Lyman Middle School), Cindi Dyer (Monunment Valley High), Shari Griffyn (Monticello High), Nikki Safrit (San Juan High), and Georgiana Simpson (Whitehorse High) thank the amazing scholars for their terrific efforts, the college for their generosity (especially art professor Anthony Lott who also served as a judge), the San Juan School District for their financial support, as well as other judges, Tony Wojcik and Kelly Pugh.
The show will be on exhibit until Tuesday, April 23 in the Health and Science Library building on the USU campus in Blanding.
Toni Nakai, a ninth grade student from San Juan High, won the top prize for high school painting for Mr. Green Sees You. Second goes to Heyleigh Warren of San Juan, and third goes to Durshanna Cody of Monument Valley.
Angel Palmer, a senior at Whitehorse, won the top prize for high school mixed media with Fox Snooze.
Second goes to McKenzie Redd of Monticello, third to Faith Palmer of Whitehorse, and honorable mention to Katharine Weiderhold of San Juan.
Ellie Thayn, a senior from Monticello, won the top prize for high school drawing.
Second goes to Sarah Benally of Whitehorse, third to Portia Yazzie of Monument Valley, and honorable mention to Shannon Luna of Monument Valley.
Soyer Toney, a junior from Whitehorse, won the top prize for high school printmaking for A Good Paint.
Second goes to Dineah Nakai of San Juan, third to Faith Palmer of Whitehorse, and honorable mention to Sadie Brown.
Bryant Francom, a ninth grade student from San Juan High, won the top prize for high school sculpture for Thinker.
Second goes to Brianne Orr of San Juan, third to Tyler Barton of San Juan, and honorable mention to Tyson Billie of San Juan.
Jacqueline Benally, a junior from Whitehorse, won the top prize for high school ceramics for Peace to the UFO.
Second goes to Autumn Miller of San Juan, third to Ramsay Holliday of San Juan, and honorable mention to Isabel Young of San Juan.
In the middle school categories, Easton Young of Monticello won the top painting. Second goes to Lily Badger of Monticello, third to Autumn Nakai of Whitehorse, and honorable mention to Brody Bilbao of ARL Middle School.
Kyler Little of Whitehorse won the top mixed media for Rex in Trouble. Second goes to Kirby Willie of Whitehorse and third to Ty Harrison of Whitehorse.
Sydney Murdock of ARL won the top drawing for My Mirrored Image. Second to Taeg Palmer of ARL, third to Alroy Mike of Whitehorse, and honorable mention to Parker Snyder of ARL.
Ty Harrison of Whitehorse is first in printmaking for I Am a Giant. Second to Mariah Eddie of Whitehorse, third to Tia Black of ARL, and honorable mention to Kirby Willie of Whitehorse.
Olivia Barton of ARL is first in sculpture with Raku Gargoyle. Second to Mikenzi Fowler of ARL, third to Parker Snyder of ARL, and honorable mention to Shannon Ford of ARL.
Ella Davis of ARL is first in ceramics for My Favorite Teapot. Second to Olivia Barton of ARL and third to Jaydee  Shumway of ARL.
