Airplane crash kills four near Eastland on Feb. 22

Four men from a small community in Alberta, Canada were killed in an airplane crash on February 22 on farmland east of Monticello.
The men were traveling from Grand Junction, CO to Albuquerque, NM and ran into poor weather conditions.
The plane was declared missing on February 22. The following day, another plane flying overhead at 16,000 feet heard the locater beacon from the missing plane.
Responders from San Juan County discovered the plane in a field. All four occupants had been killed upon impact. There was a large debris field at the accident scene.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is handling the investigation of the crash, which killed pilot Bill Kaupp, age 64; his son Clinton Kaupp, age 28; Ronald McKenzie, age 68; and Timothy Mueller, age 28. They are all from New Dayton, Alberta, Canada, a small farming community near Lethbridge.
San Juan County Sheriff Rick Eldredge reports that after the fact, several area residents reported they heard a low-flying plane on the day of the accident.
However, because of poor visibility conditions, the crash scene wasn’t discovered until the following day.
