Blanding offers a bountiful array of gifts for everyone on your list
by Kara Laws
With Christmas day less than a week away, buying local gifts is more beneficial than ever. We have run out of time to wait for shipping, shipping mistakes, or gifts arriving a little more lackluster than described.
Luckily for San Juan County residents, Blanding hosts a plethora of unique and creative gift ideas to help take the stress out of your last minute Christmas shopping.
Many are surprised at the vast options available right in town: blankets, home décor, spiritual gifts, handcrafted jewelry, sporting goods, and hand-painted pottery are the most obvious. However, Blanding business owners also excel at experiences.
Let’s explore some shops together, shall we? Finish up your Christmas shopping the easy way, right here at home.
First stop – San Juan Pharmacy: Start by falling in love with the hand-picked home and Christmas décor. Each year, Curator Leslie Nielson personally handpicks each item to be sold in the gift shop.
As you walk in, visions of beautifully decorated aesthetics come to life: signs, paintings, clocks, figurines, and the perfect pieces to complete any mantle.
Next to the stunning and adorable décor, you will find a spiritual section for LDS-minded gift giving. Here they have everything from missionary clocks, ties, and baptism keepsakes, to calendars of Christ and LDS books.
San Juan Pharmacy also hosts a beautiful variety of Christmas nativities, delicious Swiss chocolates, and a whole wall of scented candles.
Delicate jewelry, scarves, women’s dresses and blouses, and children’s books add themselves to the many options available in this stunning shop. As an added bonus, they offer free gift wrapping to save you precious time and money.
Next, check out Enchanted Gifts and Treasures right next door to the San Juan Pharmacy, a small shop that hosts handmade scripture cases, bags, and quilts.
Have a cook on your shopping list? They offer pot holders with matching aprons and the combination is adorable. They also have a whole wall of scrapbooking supplies for the scrapbooker in your life.
Shopping for a little one or expectant mother? Enchanted Treasures stocks handmade baby blankest and burp cloth sets, adorable hooded towels, and even a fun and fluffy stuffed animals and handmade baby dolls. Personal, beautiful, and perfect.
Enchanted Gifts and Treasures is the perfect place to pick up your personal and often hand-sewn gift for the person you love, or the person that you forgot to buy a gift for a month ago.
Bonus: they often have homemade Big Hunks, cinnamon rolls, and honey candy. Honey candy is an amazing stocking stuffer and cinnamon rolls would be a delightful Christmas morning breakfast.
La Petite Flower Shop: While we are on Main Street, walk one more shop down and you will find the newly re-modeled flower shop. This cute and fragrant shop is the perfect stop for the floral lover in your life. Fresh wreaths, winter birdhouses, poinsettias, Christmas cactus, and small gifts currently adorn their shelves.
Flowers and succulents not in stock can be custom ordered, designed, and completed with handmade cards. Don’t forget, they have silk flowers and ribbons, which are perfect for making into cute head wreaths for little girls’ stockings.
Continue your shopping trip by crossing the street to Redd’s Ace Hardware. With Ace’s expansion, they have just about everything the outdoorsman, or woman, in your life could want.
They host a plethora of camping equipment, from sleeping bags to tents to lanterns. Ready to go all out? Ace has a variety of firearms and ammunition for the hunter in your home, and fishing poles for the avid anglers.
Ace also stocks great items for stocking stuffers which, let’s face it, is usually the last thing we all buy. Stop by for great options like flashlights, candy, funny socks, little toys, balls, cooking utensils, and tools. Basically, they have just about anything practical your family could want.
Want to make a bang this year and go all in? Stop by and pick up a new grill. Want something for your favorite crafter? Grab some fabric; the purple paisley minky is incredible. Nothing says, “I love you” like being wrapped in fabric that is softer than a cloud.
Stop by the tool aisle for the DIY man or incredibly cool girl on your list. Stuck with a workaholic left to shop for? Ace has an aisle for them too.
Trading posts: Blanding also host two excellently stocked trading posts. Stop by Hunt’s Trading Post or Blue Mountain Trading Post for authentic and gorgeous silver and turquoise jewelry and traditional Native American jewelry, including apple blossom necklaces and bolo ties.
The earrings and bracelets will fit in a stocking but bring joy and possibly a few squeals to any turquoise or coral loving girl.
Blue Mountain Trading Post also hosts a huge collection of stones: semi-precious, polish stone, petrified wood, and dinosaur bones.
Plus, they can cut, polish, and drill any rock that you have found yourself. Think of the possibilities! Remember when you used to pick up rocks on the road and bring them home to your mother? Now you can give her a rock she actually wants to keep.
Don’t forget, they have hats, shirts, stuffed animals, mugs, and books as well. I also have my eye on these incredibly cool Native American style socks.
They close for the season on Dec. 20, so don’t forget to get your shopping done today.
Cedar Mesa Pottery: This place hosts so much more than I ever thought it did. While, they do have painted pottery, lamps, bowls, bears, vases, and insanely beautiful decorative pieces, they also have t-shirts, loose gemstones, arrowheads, and even tree ornaments.
Custom Apparel: Blanding boasts not one, but three custom apparel shops: Bear Skins Custom Ink, Diné Designs, and Pick-a-Stich. You can embroider a clever scarf for your sister, a sarcastic hat for your brother, and get all your grandkids matching t-shirts.
Bears Skins can take orders from one shirt up to over 500 shirts. Get every person knocked off your list with matching t-shirts that state your coolness. They also have hoodies, jackets, t-shirts, and hats in stock right now, so you can get your gifts quick.
You cannot forget The Furniture Gallery on our shopping excursion. If you want to make a splash this year, stop by for high quality and gorgeous couches and chairs.
Or, if you want a gift that benefits both you and your spouse, swing by and pick out your next bed. They have everything from coffee tables to night stands, to pillows and lamps.
Touch the fabric, compare colors, and know that you are buying exactly what you want.
San Juan Building Supply: At San Juan Building Supply you are only limited by your imagination. They have everything you need for great do-it-yourself gifts. Make a shelf for your kid’s books, build the mantel she has always wanted, create a shoe rack for all those darn shoes, build a dollhouse, or make a giant-sized Jenga game.
The possibilities are endless, and Stan Hurst’s staff will help you make sure you have all the supplies you need, and even cut the wood for you themselves.
Gift Cards: Photographers, food, fun! Create a date night basket with movie tickets, roses from the Flower Shop, and dinner at Homestead.
Or create a family fun day with a photography session followed by dinner at the Patio, and a game of bowling or axe throwing at Pop’s Burritos.
You can create a birthday party basket at Family Retreats with a real princess from Arendelle Royalty Princess Parties and a cake from Sugar by Heather.
Perhaps create a day trip gift basket with canyoneering supplies from NorthWash Outfitters and dinner at Pop’s Burritos. Get creative and give something they will remember forever.
Blanding businesses have so much to offer residents. Let’s get to shopping and find the perfect gifts.
And since we will all be starving before the day is up, make sure you get all your food trimmings. You can order bulk food from the Grayson General Store. Or if you aren’t quite that hungry, stop by Clark’s Market to fill up your fridge.
