Learning takes flight at library

A beautiful new bronze sculpture, “Flights of Learning”, graces Veterans Memorial Park in Monticello near the San Juan County library.
The work of art is the creation of Bryce Pettit of the Pettit Wildlife Art Studio in Monticello.
The statue may not stay for long, as it is for sale and could end up at a school or park or library around the country. A similar piece is the centerpiece of the entrance to a new library in Kentwood, MI.
The sculpture features six beautifully crafted birds bursting from a book held open by a small child. Scanning the details of the birds gives an indication of Pettit’s skill in creating wildlife art. The birds seem full of life and action.
Pettit explains that the owl represents science and math; the falcon, history; the jay, literature; the meadowlark, music; the hummingbird, fantasy; and the tern stands for the arts.
