Local physician earns Impact Award

The Utah Office of Primary Care and Rural Health (PCRH) is pleased to present Dr. Casey McCullough of Blue Mountain Hospital with an Impact Award. Dr. McCullough is a perfect example of a versatile provider. He cares for maternity, emergency and primary care patients in Blanding, Utah. 
Research indicates that healthcare providers from rural communities are more likely to stay long term in their positions. Dr. McCullough, originally from Panguitch, is a success story of the “Grow Your Own” healthcare workforce initiative.
The son of a healthcare provider, he left Utah to attend medical school and complete his residency, but returned home to serve patients in rural Utah. In fact, Dr. McCullough’s father was a physician’s assistant, and his brothers were emergency medical technicians as soon as they were eligible. 
Dr. McCullough serves in a variety of roles. He is a family practice provider with specialized obstetrics training, helping provide maternity care that can be hard to access in rural Utah.
He chairs the emergency department and treats patients as an ER physician. He also serves as medical director at Blue Mountain Hospital, an unpaid, staff-nominated role.
Dr. McCullough is the medical director of the emergency medicine  program at the Utah Navajo Health System.
Dr. McCullogh is known for helping newer providers, even on his days off. He also supports the nursing staff by helping with training and drills. 
“When Dr. McCullough chose to work for Blue Mountain Hospital, it wasn’t for lack of other offers. Rather, he was only interested in jobs in rural and underserved areas,” said Jeremy Lyman, CEO of Blue Mountain Hospital. “He goes above and beyond, offering house calls, research and supporting new staff, dedicating hours of his personal time to ensure life-changing healthcare is accessible to his friends and neighbors.”
