San Juan Hospital to celebrate National Hospital Week May 12-18

San Juan Hospital will celebrate National Hospital Week with special events and recognitions throughout the week of May 12-18. The theme of the 2019 event is “Celebrating Health and Healing.”
According to San Juan Hospital CFO Farley Crofts, the hospital has participated in the annual celebration for at least 15 years.
He said it’s “a way to boost employee morale, celebrate employee successes, and reach out to the community to help them view [the hospital] as a valuable resource.”
The hospital will offer several discounted healthcare labs and screenings during the week-long event. Interested individuals are encouraged to visit or call the San Juan Clinic – Blanding at 435-678-2254 or the San Juan Hospital Lab at 435-587-1222.
A blood drive will take place from 2-6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15 in the San Juan Hospital Administrative Building. Appointments are highly recommended but walk-ins will be accepted.
For more information on the blood drive contact Sherie Haller at 435-587-1218. To schedule an appointment, visit BloodHero.com and use Sponsor Code: sanjuanhsp.
Elementary students will have an exciting opportunity to don surgical caps and booties and tour the hospital, which will include an operating room walkthrough. They’ll also be able to check out an ambulance and a helicopter during the week.
“It’s a way to help the kids see that there are nice people at the hospital who want to help and it’s not a scary bad place,” Crofts said. “It’s an opportunity to educate them and also let them have some fun and see what goes on behind the doors.”
Local elementary students are also participating in a National Hospital Week artwork program, so you’ll see their drawings based on the 2019 theme displayed throughout the hospital.
National Hospital Week has been a healthcare tradition since 1921, when it was established to honor famous nurse and public health activist Florence Nightingale (1820-1910).
Originally celebrated on Nightingale’s birthday, May 12, as “National Hospital Day,” it was expanded to a week-long event in 1953 so hospitals could use it to plan and implement more extensive public information programs.
Currently sponsored by the American Hospital Association, National Hospital Week provides an opportunity to recognize employee achievements, to educate the community about the services hospitals offer, and to keep the public up to date on technological advances in the healthcare field.
