Elementary students enjoy snowshoeing excursion

by Hannah Plemons

During the last week of January, sixth grade students from Monticello, Montezuma Creek and Mexican Hat Elementary Schools participated in snowshoe field trips.

The field trips, taught by Canyon Country Outdoor Education instructors from the National Park Service, led students on snowshoe hikes through the Manti-La Sal National Forest and covered lessons on winter ecology. The lessons taught on heat energy, seasons, plant and animal survival strategies and microorganisms are part of the sixth grade science curriculum.

The more than thirty pairs of snowshoes were borrowed courtesy of the Four Corners School. Mrs. Torres’ class is pictured after their field trip at Dalton Springs Campground. This was the first time snowshoeing for many students.
