San Juan FFA members shine at Convention

Members of the San Juan FFA Chapter recently returned from the 98th annual Utah FFA State Convention, where they represented their school and community with distinction.
The convention, which brings together thousands of students from across the state, serves as the culminating event for competitive events, leadership development, and individual member recognition.
The San Juan FFA Chapter demonstrated its strength in the “Leadership Development Events” (LDEs), which challenge students to refine their public speaking and critical thinking skills.
In the Prepared Public Speaking event, Dodger Black delivered a researched and rehearsed speech on Taildocking is the sheep industry and placed 4th in the state.
Cameron Adair showcased quick thinking in Extemporaneous Public Speaking, having only 30 minutes to prepare a speech on a randomly selected agricultural topic.
The chapter’s youngest members were represented by Peyton Hosler in the FFA Creed Speaking event, a competition for freshmen that requires the recitation of the five-paragraph FFA Creed followed by a rigorous question-and-answer session regarding its meaning.
Peyton represented her chapter with pure excellence and placed second in the state.
In the realm of team dynamics, the Parliamentary Procedure team, consisting of Stetson Black, Lucy Black, Chloe Francom, Brinkley Knight, Isha LeValley, and Boston Monson, demonstrated their mastery of Robert’s Rules of Order.
The team was tasked with conducting a mock chapter meeting while correctly utilizing various parliamentary motions under the pressure of a ticking clock and a panel of judges.
The convention is also a time to celebrate the highest levels of individual achievement.
This year, the chapter is proud to support Stetson Black as a State Officer Candidate, a role that requires extensive interviews and a commitment to serving the nearly 10,000 FFA members across the state of Utah.
Stetson was selected to serve the Utah FFA Association as the 2026-2027 State Treasurer, making this the first time in the history of the San Juan FFA Chapter to have a student be selected to represent the chapter in a state office.
Furthering the chapter’s success, Stetson Black was named the recipient of a Utah FFA Foundation Scholarship, recognized for his academic excellence and commitment to a future in the agricultural industry.
On a global chapter level, San Juan FFA was recognized with the Superior Chapter Award.
This honor is given to chapters that successfully complete and document at least one activity in each of the 15 required categories of the National Quality Chapter Standards, proving that the local program is well-rounded and impactful in the areas of growing leaders, building communities, and strengthening agriculture.
“We are incredibly proud of how these students represented our school,” said Mikell Monson, San Juan FFA Advisor.
“Success at the state level is a testament to the hours of practice these students put in after school and the support we receive from our local community and school administration.”
FFA is a dynamic youth organization that changes lives and prepares members for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.
