Monticello High School Sterling Scholars 2024

One Monticello high student was among the winners in the 44th annual Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholar competition. An additional three Monticello students were named as runner-up.
The winners were announced on March 4 at a presentation at Monticello High School. A total of 63 students from Carbon, Emery, Grand, and San Juan counties competed in the event, which has been held each year since 1981.

The winner in Computer Technology is Jesse Pettit from Monticello High School. Jesse is a multi-time State Medalist in both track and cross country.  When he is not out for a run, he is on his computer.  He has built his own PC and has published his own app.  (Now available at the Mac Store, feel free to download today.)  He is a very hard worker and has finished as Academic All-state in Cross-Country and has a 30 Composite on the ACT.  A great musician, he is a leader in both band and Choir.  He is an avid Lego collector and builder and built a binary computer out of Legos.  Jesse is the son of Erin Pettit and Bryce Pettit.

Runners-up from Monticello High School include Laili Dilts in Drama and Vocal Performance,
Kahryme Alvarado in English,
and Curtis Bunker in Skilled and Technical Sciences.

Also representing Monticello High was Xander Sallee in Visual Arts, Shayla Pehrson in General Scholarship, Nial Reay in Science, and James Robert Morrison in Business and Marketing.

The Sterling Scholars event is sponsored by the Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholar Association, KSL, Deseret News, The Larry H. and Gail Miller Family Foundation and Emery Telcom.
Seniors from Whitehorse, San Juan, Monticello, Monument Valley, Green River, Navajo Mountain, Grand, Emery, and Carbon high schools can enter the competition in one of 14 categories.
Categories include Drama and Vocal Performance, Family and Consumer Science, Math, Dance, Social Science, Science, Forensics and Speech, Music, English, Skilled and Technical Science Education, Business and Marketing, Visual Arts, Computer Technology, and General Scholarship.

Two San Juan School District students are among the winners in the 44th annual Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholar competition. An additional ten local students were named as runner-up.
