Board Candidate: Sheila Stubbs Knight

My name is Sheila Stubbs Knight, and I am running for the school board, District 3 position. I grew up here in the San Juan school district, from Kindergarten through high school graduation.
My husband and I raised four children, three of whom are now adults. I now work full-time as a registered nurse.
My passion, priority and purpose is to hear individual stories and concerns, especially those who feel their voice hasn’t been relevant.
I think parents have a right and a responsibility to be involved in their child’s education.
I have always been one to ponder questions as I’ve looked to understand my own life better. I have asked myself many questions through these last few months, following many conversations with many of you.
I often wonder how much is truly understood regarding what teachers and para-professional staff actually do, what transportation staff does, what food staff does, etc.
And do we see, actually see and know deeply, each child? Do we as a district exist for the children, or for the adults?
I think children of all ages are our most precious resource. I will protect the well-being of each child within this large school district.
As I have been talking to individuals across this large county, I’ve come to realize the only way to know concerns is to have those conversations.
I invite all to bring those to me. I genuinely want to learn what each person’s experience has been, those of parents and staff from Monument Valley to Navajo Mountain, from Aneth to La Sal, and every school in between.
I promise to protect our district from outside entities that may try to inundate our schools with their larger agendas. The voices within this county are the ones I will hear, the ones who know our children.
I do not have allegiances to any last name or group of people, all are perfectly equal in my mind and heart.
I have consciously paid for my own campaign, so that my God-given conscience and the objective data presented to me may be my only guides in decisions for this school district.
I vow to honor every tax dollar voted for spending, as sacred funds from hardworking citizens. I would appreciate your vote and promise to treat with the respect it deserves.
