“Unkempt” wins Spelling Bee

Alexis Bailey, Hyrum Vess, and Lucas Jeppesen were the top three finishers in the San Juan School District Spelling Bee, held February 24 at San Juan High School.

After Jeppesen was eliminated, Bailey and Vess battled through round after round before Bailey correctly spelled “unkempt” and walked away with the top honors.

Alexis Bailey is a student at Monticello High School, while Hyrum Vess is a student at Monticello Elementary School, and Lucas Jeppesen is a student at Albert R Lyman (ARL) Middle School in Blanding.

Twelve school-level spelling whizzes advanced to the district spelling bee.

The school-level winners from Monticello High School (seventh and eighth grades) include Lincoln Blanchard first, Alexis Bailey second, and Jocelyn Francom third.

School-level winners from Monticello Elementary School include Hyrum Vess first, Bobby Morrison second, and Amelia Bailey third.

The school-level winners from ARL Middle School include Camden Crofts first, Lucas Jeppesen second, and Taylee Bradford third.

School-level winners from Blanding Elementary School include Sadler Nielson first, Olivia Nielson second, and Oliver Moses third.

The top three will advance to the next step, the regional spelling bee held in the spring.

In non-COVID years, the winner of the regional event advances to the national spelling bee in Washington DC in June.
