Local student from Blanding finishes second at regional spelling bee

Adriana Johnson, a seventh grade student at Albert R. Lyman Middle School in Blanding, finished second in the 2018 SESC Regional Spelling Bee at Green River High School on March 8.
The SESC Regional Spelling Bee is a local competition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The winner of the competition will represent Southeastern Utah at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
Johnson was the top local finisher in the regional competition. Other students from the San Juan School District who participated in the event include Kahryme Alvarado,
a sixth grade student at Monticello Elementary, and Jessie Black, a fourth grade student at Blanding Elementary School.
Local spelling bees were held in the San Juan, Carbon, Emery, and Grand school districts, along with Pinnacle Canyon Academy. The top three winners from each local bee advanced to the regional bee.
The overall winner is Garrett Bryner, an eighth grade student at Mont Harmon Middle School in Price. Finishing in third place is Pierce Bryner, also an eighth grade student at Mont Harmon Middle School.
