After 24 years, it is time to move on

DUST IN THE WIND
by Bill Boyle
More than 24 years ago, I started a new job as Editor of the San Juan Record.
Now, 1,265 issues later, it is time to turn over the reins.
On October 8, Ryan Collins takes over as the managing Editor.
I am confident that Ryan will do a wonderful job.
A trained reporter with a broad range of work experience, Ryan is bright and talented and anxious to dive into the complexities of reporting the news in San Juan County.
I am delighted to report that even though the job search took less than a week, I was able to interview five professional journalists for the position. It was a very strong applicant pool, and I feel that we found a great new hire as Editor.

Being Editor of the San Juan Record is not an easy job.
San Juan County is a place of remarkable diversity and strong feelings.
An amazing amount of news occurs in this massive corner of the state.
Because it is impossible to report everything, difficult choices need to be made.
I assume there will be significant changes over time. Please be patient as Ryan and the staff work through these changes.
I anticipate the changes will include continued growth in our online efforts, including a new website and increased social media presence.

It is amazing to me that I have occupied the Editor seat for nearly a quarter of a century.
We have announced the births of thousands of babies, published hundreds of obituaries, covered countless meetings, printed scores of letters to the Editor, and faced an endless stream of community controversies.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to chronicle the events in this special place.
There have been many Editors over the 103 year history of the paper. My tenure as Editor has been the longest by far.
Thank you for your years of support.
