Busy summer at schools

Crews will be busy through the summer months completing a number of projects at schools in the San Juan School District.
Monument Valley is the focus of the efforts as workers scramble to complete the new Tse’bii’nidzisgai Elementary School at Monument Valley, which is scheduled to open in August. The $10 million facility will house the students and faculty that are currently at Mexican Hat Elementary School at Halchita. The school in Halchita will be knocked to the ground soon after the last day of school on May 25.
The six existing school district homes in Halchita may be moved to the housing area at the new school next year. The construction of seven new homes at the new school is nearly complete, at a cost of an additional $1 million
Construction is scheduled to be completed in coming weeks, giving faculty and staff time to move materials into the new school.
Crews will also be busy in the area while completing a number of projects at Monument Valley High School. The projects will include new heat and air conditioning systems, new classroom to replace portable trailers, a concession facility that will serve both the football field and gymnasium, new lighting, a remodeled technology center area, and a backup power system. The total cost of the work at the high school is $1,383,000.
The current plan is to remodel the existing housing at Monument Valley High School in the next year.
Crews are constructing a new track and field facility at San Juan High School in Blanding. The project will feature a new six-lane track, complete with drainage, fencing, and ADA access. New bleachers and a press box will also be installed. Total cost of the project, which is scheduled to be complete before the start of the football season in August, is $870,000.
Crews are constructing a new concession stand and bathrooms at the Monticello High School football field. Total cost of the project is $175,000.
The projects are funded, in part, by a voted leeway approved by voters in 2006. Voted leeway funds are matched by the State of Utah and used to finance construction projects in the district. The San Juan School District carries no debt.
The next major construction project in the district is a new school to house Monticello Elementary School. Construction is tentatively planned to begin in 2013.
