The Monticello Buckaroos completed an undefeated regular season with a 65-50 road win over a motivated Green River Pirate team on February 22 in Green River.
The Pirates came out hot Friday night and the Bucks were stone cold leaving the Pirates determinedly leading 15-7 after one quarter.
But the Bucks were patient and when the shots started rolling in during the second quarter, the tide turned even though Green River led at halftime 24-22.
In the second half, the blitz began as the Bucks ran off 43 points while holding the Pirates to 26 to win going away.
Austin Maloy scored 12 points, as did Tanner Eardley to pace the Buckaroo shooting parade, with Dillon Maughan adding 11 points and two treys.
Nine Buckaroos solved the scoring problem as head coach Tony Esplin used his deep bench effectively.
The win gives back to the Buckaroos the Region 19 championship, which Green River wrested from them last year, with a spotless 10-0 record and 17-4 overall.
The Bucks will play the Wayne Badgers at the 1A state tournament in Richfield Wednesday at 4 p.m.
If you can’t make it to the game, be sure and cheer the Bucks on the radio at 103.9 KAAJ-LP. I personally like to watch the game at Desnews.com while listening to Rhett Sifford on KAAJ-LP. It’s a perfect combination. Good luck to the Bucks. Lets bring home a state championship! I think they will.
