Buckaroos claim region cross country titles
The Monticello High School cross country team ran away with the Region 19 titles on October 15. The girls team ran to a perfect score of 15, while the boys dominated with a score of 17.
Macee Nielson and Adam Butler claimed the individual titles at the race, which was held at the Hideout Golf Club in Monticello. The region race leads to the state race, which is held on October 22 in Salt Lake City.
Following Nielson (20:55) in the girls race were the remaining six members of the Buckaroo squad, including Shelby Lewis (23:05), Hannah Boyle (23:20), Loren Randall (24:14), Julie Butler (24:45), Jennifer Mantz (24:50) and Marisa Schmidt (24:57).
Deidra Jensen (24:58) of Navajo Mountain High School, and Tia Whitehorse (26:12) and Michelle Jim (26:55) of Whitehorse High School, round out the top ten at the region meet. The Buckaroo team, and the top ten individual racers qualify for the state meet.
Adam Butler claimed his third Region title in three years while completing the three mile course in 17:43. He was followed by teammates Kelland Brewer (19:53) and David Boyle (20:10).
Fourth place is claimed by Travis Martin (20:12) of Whitehorse High, followed by Monticello’s Trent Sonderegger (20:13) and Casey Randall (20:14).
Bentley Benally (20:25) of Whitehorse was seventh, followed by Trey Esplin
(20:32) and Sean Getter (20:35) of Monticello. The tenth place runner is Jerrad Mitchell (20:40) of Whitehorse.
Monticello claimed the team title with 17 points, followed by Whitehorse with 46. Both teams qualify for the state race.
Other members of the Buckaroo squad are Jacob Shakespeare and Jordan Hugentobler.
Other members of the Whitehorse squad are Marcos Borjas, Cordarelton Benn, Tyler Sam, Tyson John, Kenny Whitehair, Karl Holly, Adam Yazzie, Jonathan Nelson, Eric Sam, Verano Silas, Sam Capitan and Joseph John.
