San Juan High Class of ‘57 reunion

The San Juan High School class of 1957 held their 60th year class reunion on July 3 and 4.  “Six or seven decades ago, graduating classes were much smaller than they are today,” recalls Gary Guymon.  Gary helped organize the class members for this special class reunion.
They took a trip down memory lane by walking through their old high school building (currently the San Juan School District Offices).   The second and third floors had been the basketball court.
Ten members of the class sat around the boardroom table with their mates and shared memories of their grade school years from 1945 to 1951.  They felt grateful to have learned how to read, do math well, and obtain a good foundation in San Juan history.
They remembered their teachers: Margaret Harvey, Rowena Winter, Eleanor Guymon, Lars Anderson, and Principal Louise Redd.
They recalled being a bit mischievous as they entered high school and were soon under the watchful eye of Principal LaRay Alexander, who gave them lessons in proper decorum. Alexander also taught the Algebra classes.  There were many great teachers, too many to mention.
Joy Shumway Holliday opened her home where a tasty dinner was served, including delicious cinnamon rolls and homemade root beer. Afterwards, class members decorated the class float for the July 4th parade.  Eleven members rode on the float, which was pulled by Curtis Hunt.
They were honored to have Luana Palmer (widow of class member Phillip Palmer) attend the activities. Others attending are: Duane Bayles and wife of Richfield, Max Black and wife of Monticello, James Black, of Mancos CO, Paul Brown and wife of Cedar Hills, Gary Guymon and wife of Blanding, Merrilyn Stevens Guymon and husband of St. George, UT, Curtis Hunt of Ucola, UT, Jimmy Winters and wife of Salt Lake City, UT, Joy Holliday of Blanding, Otis Wright of Blanding, Jim Slavens and wife of Blanding, and Judith Harvey La Montayne of Taylorsville, UT.
Not attending are Bruce Harvey, Sandra Rogers Stott, Grant Black, Marianne Hurst Scott, Micky Bayles, Norma Hurst, Edna Palmer Rogers, Jay Black, Janet Black Woodruff, and Kay Harris.
Greatly missed deceased members include Arvid Black, Tommy Keele, Natalie Nielson, Kent Palmer, Phillip Palmer, and Raymond Sipe.
