Big breaks in basketball

SPORTS SHORTS
With two huge wins in the past two weeks, the Lady Buckaroos from Monticello found themselves in a three way tie at the top of the leader board in Region 19.
But with those two wins coming over the teams with whom they are tied, Green River and Whitehorse, the Lady Bucks own the momentum heading into the stretch run of the season.
In an important home stand, the Lady Bucks handed the Pirates from Green River only their second loss of the season, 45-41, and the Raiders from Whitehorse High their first region loss, 54-49, putting the Lady Bucks in the driver’s seat.
Swayzi Slade led the Bucks against the Raiders with 21 points.  Abby Chadwick added five, none more important than her jumper in the lane with barely a minute to play and the Bucks clinging to a one point lead.  And then, Slade iced the game with three free throws in the last 30 seconds.
The surging Buckaroos fell behind at halftime to the high flying Lady Pirates, but behind the clutch shooting of Abby Chadwick, who tossed in 21 points, and the rebounding and scoring of junior Jamie Keyes, who grabbed 13 boards and scored nine points, the Buckaroo gals grabbed the lead and held on to score the upset.
The two wins, with a loss to Bayfield, CO sandwiched in between, leaves the Lady Bucks with a record of 8-7, though they are 5-2 in their last seven games.
Next up, the Monument Valley Cougars on Tuesday and Navajo Mountain on Friday in Monticello, with a road trip to Price and a game against Pinnacle.
Lady Broncos
The Lady Broncos captured a critical road win in overtime over the North Sevier Wolves on Friday, 46-37.
Boasting a seven point lead as the fourth quarter began, the Broncos found themselves tied at the end of regulation, but a strong overtime period left the Ladies from Blanding with a nice trip home after they outscored the Wolves 13-2 in overtime.
Kelsi Meyer and Jolene Kirk anchored the team victory with 15 and 11 points respectively.
Tuesday finds Coach Justin Moon’s team in Blanding against the Grand County Red Devils and at Gunnison on Friday.
The Lady Broncos have won six in a row and eight of their last nine, finding themselves in first place in Region 15 action.
Buckaroo Barnhouse
The boys of Rhett Maughan continue to find the win column after an important region win over the Whitehorse Raiders in Monticello.
The Buckaroo defense, the stingiest in the state, allowing only 38 points a game, put the clamps on the hot-shooting Raiders Friday night in Monticello, scoring a whopping 63-42 win.
The Raiders, who boast the leading scorer in the 1A in Shawn Dickson (averaging nearly 22 points a game), started the game looking like they might shoot the Bucks out of the gym, forging an 18-11 first quarter lead.  Dickson had 11 of those 18 points.
But Coach Maughan switched to a zone the second quarter, forcing the Raiders to shoot from three point land, where they are usually so effective.
With just enough pressure on the shooters, the Raiders couldn’t find the range and with the Duncan boys, Dallin and Jake, and Devin Wright sweeping the boards clean, the Bucks scored the first 16 points of the second quarter, outscored the Raiders 19-4  and raced to a 30-22 halftime lead.
Dickson scored only two in the second quarter and after starting the second half with a trey, only scored two more the rest of the game.
For the night, the Buckaroos held the Raiders to a 3 for 15 effort from three point land. Dallin Duncan lead the Bucks with 24 points, scoring on 12 of 14 shots, and grabbing 16 rebounds.  Little brother Jake scored 15 more points, Cory Young 10 and Devin Wright contributed mightily with nine points, six rebounds and six assists.
San Juan boys
The boys of San Juan made the 1971 State Championship reunion a happy affair with a 73-52 pounding of North Sevier.
AJ Slavens, fully recovered from an ankle sprain, poured in 24 points, with Cameron Shumway adding 18 as the Broncos dominated on the inside.  Sophomore Barkley Christensen tossed in 11 points off the bench, including two treys.  The win moves San Juan to 1-1 in region play.
Earlier in the week, the Broncos faced Durango CO. After falling behind 22-10 at halftime, they roared back with 35 points in the second half while holding Durango to only 16 to win, 45-38.
Slavens again led the Broncos with 14 points, along with Tyler Nielson’s 11 in the big comeback.
