Beginning of the end for snow pack

For the third straight month, precipitation figures were lower than average amounts. However, a wet December keeps year to date figures near normal amounts.
April 1 often marks the high point of the snow pack in area mountains.
In 2010, the snow began to melt from the Camp Jackson reporting station on March 12.
At the current time, the snow pack is 79 percent of normal. However, the highpoint of the snow pack, with 16.6 inches of water on March 12, is 107 percent of the average high point reading.
Reservoirs are ready to begin receiving runoff from area mountains. On April 4, Loyds Lake was at 62 percent of capacity, Recapture Reservoir was at 71 percent of capacity and Lake Powell was at 53 percent of capacity.
The weather reporting station at the Port of Entry in Monticello is no longer functional. The National Weather Service is looking for a volunteer to take and transmit daily readings in Monticello. Call John at 970-243-7007, ext. 327.
