Ballot errors force reprint, new ballots to be mailed today

There are a number of errors in the general election ballot and the San Juan County Clerk's office is scrambling to provide correct ballots for the impacted voters.
The problem is in the South Monticello precinct and includes ballot errors with races for San Juan County commissioner and the San Juan School Board.
For voters in the South precinct and within Monticello city limits, the ballot did not correctly list the school board race. There were 357 ballots that were misprinted with this error.
For voters in the South precinct outside of city limits and East of Highway 191, the ballot did not list correctly list the County commission race. There were 68 ballots that were misprinted with this error.
San Juan County Clerk John David Nielson reports that new ballots have been printed and will be mailed today, Thursday, October 27.
Nielson encourages voters in the South Monticello precinct to wait for the new ballots. He adds that any ballots that are received from the misprinted batch will be held.
Initially, ballots were scheduled to be mailed on October 11. They were delayed by several days and were eventually mailed on October 18.
Nielsen has taken responsibility for the errors and said that his staff is working hard to minimize the impact.
San Juan County is in the middle of several federal lawsuits regarding voting rights, including cases that may result in changes to commission voting districts, school district voting districts, and vote by mail issues.
All registered voters in San Juan County have been mailed ballots for the November 8 general election. Voters can return the ballots in the mail before election day or vote in person on election day in Monticello, Montezuma Creek, Oljato, and Navajo Mountain.
