Voters set to participate in November 2 election

Voters have their say this week, culminating in the November 2 general election that will determine a host of local, state and national positions.
The local race that is generating a large amount of interest is for San Juan County Sheriff. Longtime Sheriff Mike Lacy is challenged by Utah Highway Patrol sergeant Rick Eldredge in the race for the county’s top law enforcement position.
Lacy and Eldredge take the opportunity to outline their positions to voters in a feature on page three of the San Juan Record.
Two races for the San Juan School board will be determined on November 2. Incumbent Elsie Dee and challenger Howard Todachennie face off for the position representing the Montezuma Creek / Aneth area.
Board president Nelson Yellowman’s name is not on the ballot, but he is the only candidate to run as a write-in candidate in the Monument Valley / Navajo Mountain area.
Local judges who face judicial retention elections include Lyon Hazleton, James Harris, Douglas Thomas, George Hammond, and William Thorne.
The majority of the names on the ballot for local positions are incumbents who are not opposed. They include Commissioner Kenneth Maryboy, Assessor Howard Randall, Attorney Craig Halls, Clerk Norman Johnson, Recorder Louise Jones, and Surveyor David Bronson.
Two new elected officials are also unopposed on the ballot. They include Phil Lyman, who will replace Lynn Stevens on the San Juan County Commission, and Glenis Pearson, who will replace Paul Barr as San Juan County Treasurer.
There are four proposed Utah Constitutional amendments on the ballot.
The race for Governor is heated, with Gary Herbert seeking his first elected term after being appointed Governor when Jon Huntsman Jr. resigned. He is challenged by Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Carroon.
Democrat Sam Granato and Republican Mike Lee lead the field of candidates to replace Bob Bennett in the United States Senate.
Incumbent Jim Matheson is challenged by Republican Morgan Philpot in the race for Utah’s second district seat in the United States House of Representatives.
Christine Watkins is unopposed in her race for a seat in the Utah House of Representatives.
The polls open at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, November 2 and close at 8 p.m.
More than 80 San Juan County residents had already exercised their right to vote by the press deadline on October 25. A growing number of voters in each election are voting early. In addition, a number of voters will participate via absentee ballot, including six San Juan County precincts that use absentee ballots exclusively.
