USU Eastern Blanding Campus helps new businesses get started

BLANDING, UT – Small business start-ups and expansions can turn to Utah State University-College of Eastern Utah Blanding Campus for much-needed help.
USU Eastern Blanding Campus administers a Business Incubation Center designed to provide early assistance to business upstarts. The center provides office space, a landline connection, high-speed internet and use of a conference room in a clean, state-of-the-art facility for a fraction of the cost.
“The recent Olympics underscore how essential a good start is in any competition,” said Guy Denton, USU Eastern Blanding Campus vice chancellor and director. “It’s no different for new businesses. This service is a natural extension of our college since providing fresh starts for members of our community is a primary reason for USU Eastern’s existence. We are confident that we can help to make a difference in the success rate of fledgling businesses.”
The purpose of the center is to provide a low-cost alternative during early stages of business start-ups or expansions without competing with commercial office space. Once stable, Incubation Center clients move into commercial real estate, said Bill Olderog, USU Eastern Blanding Campus associate professor and regional director of Utah Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) network.
In addition to low-cost, high-quality office space, Incubation Center clients have the opportunity to receive business counseling and support from SBDC.
“Our center director, Buddy Redd, brings a wealth of insight, experience and business resources to community and Incubation Center clients,” Olderog said. “Buddy can assist businesses in locating capital, preparing business plans, and in conducting market research.”
The SBDC provides free access to a marketing research firm, a state-wide network of business counselors and consultants and a number of online business resources and tools.
The Incubation Center is housed in the Blanding Arts and Events Center on the USU Eastern Blanding Campus. Recent to the Blanding Arts and Events Center is Shauna Sherrow, newly hired as center coordinator. In addition to business meetings, the events center provides an ideal location for conferences, theater productions, community events, receptions and family gatherings. It includes a fully furnished kitchen, conference room, large auditorium and indoor and outdoor theaters, Olderog said.
