Monticello’s Kaitlyn Clark and San Juan’s Ammon Mitchell both ended their storied high school track careers as hurdling champions at the state track and field championships at BYU May 18.
Clark captured the 100 meter hurdle title in 16.37 to win by two tenths of a second.  Clark has been working for this championship for three years, having placed third as a sophomore and second as a junior.
Mitchell has owned the 2A 110 meter hurdle event, claiming the title for the third year in a row with a two tenths victory himself on Saturday.  There aren’t too many three time state champions in track and field.  Mitchell placed fourth as a freshman, way back in 2010.
Clark’s victory helped Monticello finish third in the 1A girls division.  She is also a member of the 4x100 champion relay team that also includes Shania DeAnda, Nancy Johnson, Arianna Reay and Neely Ryan. Clark also finished fourth in the 300 hurdles.
Similarly, Mitchell helped the Bronco 4x100 relay team finish third. Other team members are Payton Palmer, Max Morley, Maverik Shumway and Caleb Pugh. Mitchell also is second in the long jump competition.
Monticello’s Arianna Reay had a good weekend, placing second in the long jump, third in the high jump and fifth in the 100 meter dash.  Mekayla Leiataua is third in the shot put and fourth in the discus.  Devin Dalton is third in the discus and seventh in javelin while Mikaela Hughes is eighth in the discus.
Britanny Keith (800), Zoe Chadwick (400) and Nancy Johnson (200)scored points for MHS with eighth place finishes in those three events.  Two Lady Buckaroo relay teams came in fifth place, the medley relay with Ryan, DeAnda, Keith, Chadwick, and Cambria Welch, and the 4x400 team with Johnson, Keith, Chadwick, and Welch.
Buckaroo boys were seventh in 1A boys, led by PJ Leiataua, who placed in three events, second in the discus, fourth in the shot put and sixth in the javelin.  Zach Johnson is third in discus.  Brian Tanner and Joseph Engel scored high for the Bucks with fifth and sixth place finishes in the high jump.  Collin Hatch placed twice with a sixth place finish in the 3200 meter run and eighth in the 1600.  Justin Wright finished off the Buckaroo scoring, finishing seventh in the 800.
Max Morley scored high for the Broncos with a second place finish in the 400.   Christain Sherrow, sixth in the 800, Mike Monson, seventh in the shot put, and Brittain Bowring, eighth in the high jump, all added the Bronco boys total, who came in tied for fourth with Manti.
The Bronco medley relay team of Palmer, Shumway, Javen Ivins, Sherrow, and Pugh grabbed fourth place.
San Juan girls were 12th place in the 2A meet.  Samantha Giddings is the highest placer with a second place in the shot put.  She adds a seventh place in the discus.  Brooke Lyman stepped off the softball diamond to grab sixth in the shot.  McKale Simpson is sixth in long jump. Brittany Bleak (high jump) and Jenny Sherrow (javelin) both placed eighth.
State Golf
Junior Tanner Eardley powered the Monticello Buckaroo golf team to a fifth place finish by placing fifth himself, shooting 79-77 for 156 in the two day event at Rose Park Golf Course. Sophomore  Jens Brewer placed 16th with a 89-87, 176 total.  Freshman Bryson Chamberlain and Matt Benson both shot 196 to round out the Buckaroo scoring.  Ben Stonebrink and Tobyn Esplin also participated with 199 and 201 totals respectively.  Eardley, after placing eighth as a freshman and sixth as a sophomore was excited about shooting in the 70s both rounds.  “First time I’ve ever done that,” he said.
Jesica Greenway, playing as an individual in the girls 1A golf tournament, placed 22nd, shooting 116 at Rose Park.  Jessie Ivins finished in 12th place in the 2A girls tournament, played at Lakeside Golf Course, while Mattea Lacy was 35th for the Lady Broncos with a round of 121.
Hole-in-One
Let’s finish today with the latest golfer to knock in a hole-in-one at the Hideout.  Doug Ewart, using a nine iron, aced the par three 17th hole at the Hideout in early May.  Ewart was playing with Max Halls when he got the ace, his first.
