On top of the weather, even when under the weather

We were pleased that Lewis Black received the prestigious John Campanius Holm Award from the National Weather Service. Lewis was presented the award at the September 26 meeting of the San Juan County Commission.
Lewis been an important partner in the San Juan Record efforts to inform readers of weather events.
The San Juan Record prints a summary of the daily weather on the front page of the paper each week. Lewis provides the information each Monday morning.
In addition, we run a monthly story on the weather of the previous month. The reports include highs, lows, records, averages, year-to-date figures and more.
Lewis not only gives us the high and lows of each day, but he is a wealth of information. He is always adding a little tidbit of news that makes all the difference in our coverage.
This includes “coldest day of the year”, “a record high”, “27 days without precipitation”, “first freeze of the season” or “the boys in Grand Junction tell me it is going to change on Thursday”.
As the largest weather station in our corner of the state, Lewis provides information not only for the residents of Blanding, but for the whole county.
He is professional, competent, friendly and a wealth of information every time we work with him. It seems that he is good every day, regardless of whether the weather is good or if he is under the weather himself.
Lewis started making weather observations in Blanding long before I became the editor of the paper in 1994 and we hope that he will continue to provide the service for years to come.
We feel that it is most deserving that Lewis Black receive this prestigious award.
