Sue’Sue’ claims top female athlete award

Tatiana Sue’Sue’ added another award to her trophy case this past week. The junior hurler on the Broncos softball team was named the High School Female Athlete of the Year at the Third Annual Governors State of Sports Awards.
Sue’Sue’s exploits on the volleyball court and on the diamond garnered the attention to be nominated for the award, she was then chosen by popular vote over the other nominees. Congratulations to Tatiana on this great accomplishment.
While Sue’Sue’ was attending the State of Sport Awards ceremony on Tuesday, April 22, her teammates faced off against Region 15 foe Emery.
After controlling the game for six innings the Lady Broncos saw 15-5 lead disappear in the top of the seventh when the Spartans pushed 13 runs across the plate to pull off the come from behind win 19-15.
Sydney Mainord got the Broncos on the board first when she scored in the bottom of the first inning off a single by Kellie Palmer.
In the bottom of the second San Juan scored three more runs pushing their lead to 4-0. Emery managed to get on the board in the top of the third, scoring two runs to cut the Bronco lead to two runs 4-2.
After a scoreless third inning the Broncos pushed five more runs across the plate in their half of the fourth inning increasing their lead to seven runs, 9-2.
Over the next two innings both teams would add runs to their score, the Spartans added one in the fifth and three more in the sixth, while the Broncos added one in the fifth and five more in the sixth.
Heading into the final inning San Juan had a commanding 15-6 lead.
Being down nine runs and with their backs against the wall the Spartans bats came alive in the top of the seventh as they scored 13 runs to take a 19-15 lead. The Broncos attempt at a comeback ended when flied out to center field giving Emery the win.
San Juan headed to Gunnison for their second game of the week. The Lady Broncos were glad to have senior Justin Hutchins and Sue’Sue’ back in the lineup.
Just two weeks before San Juan dropped a 4-3 contest to the Bulldogs in the Payson Tournament. The Broncos not only avenged that loss they did so with a major exclamation point.
Sue’Sue’ dominated the Gunnison batters as she went the distance giving up just one hit while ringing up 13 batters.
Mainord went a perfect 4-4 at the plate for San Juan. She doubled in the first inning and singled in the third, fifth, and seventh innings.
The Broncos stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the first, scoring one run on an RBI double by Sue’Sue’.
San Juan increased its lead when they scored two runs in the seventh. The inning got off to a hot start when Kellie Palmer singled, bringing home Jessica Swenson. Then Heidi Hiatt’s singled, scoring Mainord, securing the win for San Juan 4-0.
The Lady Broncos’ next game will be against Grand on Wednesday, April 30 in Blanding. The game is set for a 3 p.m. start.
San Juan will then head to the Swing for Life Tournament which was originally scheduled for last weekend April 25-26, but was postponed due to in climate weather. The Tournament has been rescheduled for this Friday and Saturday May 2-3.
The San Juan baseball team played two games this past week hosting league leading Emery on April 22 and Grand County on the 25th.
The Broncos needing wins against both squads to secure a place in the class 2A Tournament played tough late into both games before falling to the Spartans 13-1 and the Red Devils 8-1.
In spite of the lopsided final scores, both games remained close until the latter innings of the games. After six innings of play Emery held a 4-1 lead against the Broncos.
In the bottom of the sixth San Juan looked to close the gap as they got runners into scoring position early in the inning only to leave them on base.
Then in the seventh inning Emery put the game away scoring nine runs and then holding San Juan scoreless handing the Broncos the 13-1 loss.
The Broncos lone run came in the bottom of the fourth when Easton Lee doubled driving in Bronz Eldredge. Rye Nielson recorded the loss on the mound for San Juan. Nielson pitched the complete game in which he recorded seven strikeouts.
The story of the game against Grand was very similar. The Broncos kept things close trailing by just four runs, 5-1 after four innings.
After the Red Devils opened up the game in the top of the fourth inning the Broncos were unable to answer in the bottom half of the inning. Neither team scored in the fifth inning, but Grand added three more runs in the top of the sixth to push their lead to 8-1 which is where it would stay as they handed the Broncos their second loss of the week.
The Broncos struggled at the plate recording just two hits. Braxton Brown scored the only run for San Juan on a Nielson single to left field in the bottom of the second. Nielson also went the distance on the hill, surrendering 10 hits, eight runs to go along with 5 K’s.
By press time San Juan will have wrapped up their 2014 season after hosting Piedra Vista Monday, April 28. We will have the results of that game for you next week.
San Juan’s boys’ tennis team was in action again this week. The boys traveled to Monroe, UT to take on South Sevier. The Broncos enjoyed a successful day picking up the team win as they recorded wins in second singles (William Heck), third singles (Carter Holliday), first doubles (Kade Palmer and Kesian Barton) and second doubles (Ashton Jones and Lincoln Holliday).
