Sterling Scholars honored

Lexus Latham, a senior at San Juan High School, was named a Sterling Scholar at the Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholar competition in Price on March 5.
Latham is the Sterling Scholar in Family and Consumer Science. She leads a group of students from the San Juan School District who were honored for their academic work.
Latham is service oriented, and a leader. She has a strong desire to make a difference and dedicates her time to others. She is a mentor to elementary school students, freshmen peers, and is a preschool aid.
Lexus headed high school students in an Adopt-a-Grandparent program, set up clothing drives for the women’s shelter, and participated in gathering coats for Superstorm Sandy victims. She has served in numerous church callings and is an FBLA representative.
Lexus excels in athletics, leading her squad to three region titles as the tennis captain, and is a varsity softball starter with a state title. She spends her evenings and weekends waitressing and does all of this while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
Lexus is the daughter of Lana and Heath Latham.
Eight local students earned runner up honors at the competition, which pits the top students from nine schools in twelve categories. A winner and two runners up are named in each category.
Students from San Juan High who join Latham in receiving honors include runners up Cole Einerson in mathematics, Melanie Daniels in science, Rebecca Silversmith in music and Jonathan Pugh in trade and technical education.
Runners up from Monticello High School include Justin Wright in social science, Avery Gallegos in music, and Mikeala Hughes in family and consumer science.
Kayla Atcity, a senior at Whitehorse High School, is a runner up in English.
