State tennis title for Broncos

Melanie Pugh, Bailey Meyer, and Juanita Royer won the first ever state championships in girls tennis for the San Juan Broncos on October 1 at the Liberty Park Tennis Courts in Salt Lake City. 
Pugh and Meyer won the state championship in number two doubles with a three set win over a St. Josephs doubles pair.  After dropping the first set 1-6 to the St Joseph’s team, Pugh and Meyer, both seniors, buckled down and rallied to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-4. 
The San Juan duo, who were undefeated on the year, made it to the finals with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over a South Summit team and another three setter over a tough Rowland Hall pair, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Royer, also undefeated on the season, captured the number two singles state championship with a 6-4, 6-2 win over the number one seeded player from Rowland Hall, Kaitlin Ramsey.  Royer, a senior as well, beat players from Waterford, 6-2, 6-0, and Manti 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 to advance to the final.
The wins landed the Lady Broncos in third place in the team race, behind winner St. Joe and runner up Rowland Hall. 
Also participating for the Lady Broncos are junior Lexus Latham in first singles, senior Lacy Hook in third singles and seniors Rylee Lyman and Courtney MacDonald in first doubles.
Bucks earn redemption 
Redemption: to make up for, to restore the honor, worth, or reputation of.  Mission accomplished.
Maybe you remember last year’s Monticello/Altamont football game.  If you did, after Friday night on the homecoming field of the Monticello Buckaroos, that devastating game of a year ago is long forgotten after the Buckaroos clubbed the Altamont Longhorns 48-6. 
Last year, I’m sorry to remind you, the Bucks led 20-0 at halftime and took a 26-8 lead into the fourth quarter, only to watch helplessly as Altamont intercepted three Buck passes and scored 38 unanswered points in that fourth quarter to win 46-26. 
2011 was better, much better for the Bucks as they scored early and often, opening up a 28-0 halftime lead and extending the lead to 35-0 in the third quarter.  And the fourth quarter?  Monticello 13, Altamont 0. 
The 2011 turnaround for the Buckaroos continues as they jump to a 6-1 record and the number two ranking in 1A behind undefeated Duchesne.   Last year at this time, they were 2-5 and reeling from that Longhorn loss.  The Buckaroos are now second in the state in scoring at 43 points per game.  Logan High School is first with 49 points per game.

In last week’s Buckaroo win over Whitehorse, the Bucks scored 73 points, the most ever scored by the Bucks in football.  Three of those points came on a PJ Leiataua drop kick field goal, which according to Utah high school football historian George Felt, is the first known dropkick in Utah high school football since 1935.  For more information about Leiataua’s kick go tohttp://www.deseretnews.com/article/700183487/High-school-football-Felts-.... 
Bronco football
San Juan continued their relentless march into the record books and towards a possible third straight 2A football title with a resounding 40-0 shutout of winless South Sevier. 
Logan Meyer scored three TDs and Barkley Christensen threw for three TDs in the Bronco’s 27th straight win, the longest current streak in Utah and the third longest ever. 
Meyer score from 45 yards and one yard in the first quarter and caught an eight-yard TD from Christensen in the second quarter as the Broncos raced to a 34-0 homecoming halftime lead and coasted from there with a bunch of younger players getting in the game. 
Christensen also connected with Bobby Bowring from 11 yards and Ammon Mitchell from 24 yards in that first half.  He leads 2A now in touchdown passes with 15. 
Meyer, Bowring and Mitchell are two, three and four in TD receptions in 2A with five, four and three TDs respectively.  Maverik Shumway scored San Juan’s only second half touchdown with a five yard run. 
Cross Country
Buckaroo Cross Country Coach Jeff Hunt,files a report for the Buckaroos. 
“The Buckaroo Cross Country teams had a very successful week in their march to the state championships in mid October.  On a scorching day in Moab, Kelland Brewer overcame illness to finish 5th and pace the pack to a first place finish. 
“On Saturday at the Chicken Creek Challenge at Mancos, the boys barely missed the team championship, falling to Colorado powerhouse Pagosa Springs.  Collin Hatch and Kelland were third and fourth at Mancos.  The boys are all still running as a pack with all the top five runners on the team finishing within a minute of each other.
“The girls are fighting some tough injuries late in the season. However, Cambria Welch paced the girls to finish third at Moab and sixth at Mancos.  Hats off to junior Brittany Keith, who gutted out a great run at Mancos despite a gash on her knee that required 11 stitches after the meet.  That is leaving blood, sweat and tears on the trail.
“Lost in the great season the high school teams are having, the Jr. High teams finished their season last week in spectacular fashion.  Seventh grader Sara Musselman has been amazing this year, winning five out of six events. 
“Not one was more exciting than when Sara burst out of the woods and ran down two 8th grade girls to win at Mancos.  The girls team finished 3rd and 4th at Moab and Mancos.  Other girls on the team this year are Hannah Getter, Millie Boyle, Addison Hatch, Hannah Welch, and Quincy Ryan. 
The Jr. High boys have had a pack of their own taking four team titles this year.  Eli Johnson led the boys with Tyler Bird, McKayd LaRose, Brandin Clark, Brian Tanner, Jamikal Shakespeare, and Jared Crowley. They have consistently torn up courses, as well as other teams.  This past week, like their high school counterparts, they won the team title at Moab and finished second at Mancos.
The teams finish the regular season in Blanding Wednesday. The Region 19 meet is October 12 and state is October 19.
