Whitehorse basketball teams each go 2-1 at early December tournaments
The Whitehorse Raiders boys and girls basketball teams both went 2-1 at tournaments last week to improve their record and get early season experience.
The Whitehorse Raiders girls basketball team competed in the Antelope Canyon Holiday Classic in Page, Arizona over the weekend. The Lady Raiders lost their first game but bounced back to be consolation bracket champions at the tournament.
Whitehorse opened tournament play on December 5 with a 63-33 loss to Monument Valley, Arizona.
Whitehorse bounced back on December 6 with a win over Sierra Vista 50-43 to land in the consolation championship game.
The Raiders defeated Rancho high school 48-41 in that final game.
In addition to team success Whitehorse Sophomore Keiarra Martin was placed on the All-Tournament Team, and Senior Heidi Clark was awarded the girl’s 3-Point Champion.
Speaking about the tournament Coach Joni Dickson wrote about the experience being the only 1A team in the tournament field.
‘“We loved the challenge and the experience it taught us. We are absolutely proud of how the team played. Proud of how our coaches came together and made game decisions. Thankful for the family and fans who came to support us. A very special thank you to our bus driver Stella Lee.”
The Whitehorse girls team now has a 3-2 record and will next play on December 17 in Monticello. That game will be live on StreamUtah.Live and 92.7 FM.
The Whitehorse Raiders boys basketball team went 2-1 in their second week of play to improve to 2-3 on the year.
The Raiders opened play with a 52-46 loss to Pine Hill on December 5. In the loss the Raiders were led in scoring by freshman Hyatt Thomas who scored 21 points. Dominic Dance added 13 points, while Aiden Hamm scored six. Adam Joe had 3 and Kaleb Joe and Kalin Tohonnie each had one point.
The Raiders bounced back on December 6 with a 65-14 win over Tse' Yi' Gai.
Hamm and Adam Joe both finished with 11 points for the Raiders, while Thomas scored eight. Also scoring for Whitehorse was Tohonnie and Jayden John (7 points each), Kaleb Joe (6), Taylen Miller (5), Caiden Lansing (4), Dance (4) and Riley Begay with two.
The Raiders closed out their tournament with a 61-34 win over Shiprock Northwest on December 7.
Hamm and Thomas each scored 13 points in the victory while Dance put up 12 points. Also scoring for Whitehorse was Tohonnie (7 points), Adam Joe (6), Brayden John (5), Jayden John (3), and Miller with two.
The Raiders head to the 1A preview in Richfield this week with a game on Friday December 13 against Escalante at 4:00 pm and a game December 14 against Telos at 10:30 am. Both games will be broadcast on StreamUtah.Live and 92.7 FM.
