Whitehorse and Monument Valley boys basketball face off in tournament
The Whitehorse and Monument Valley boys basketball teams both went 1-2 to open their seasons at the Jerry Richardson Memorial in Shiprock, NM this past weekend.
The Raiders first game of the year was a 53-41 loss to Cuba, NM on November 30. Senior Lyric Phillips led Whitehorse with 22 points including four threes and two free throws.
Adam Joe and Dominic Dance each had six points, with Tristan Black scoring five and Kaleb Joe scoring four.
The Cougars defeated Shiprock Northwest 71-30 in their season opener. Joshua Hicks led scoring with 24 points, Melias Cly scored 15, and Braxton Goodshield added 14.
Akecheta Shortman scored six for Monument Valley while Riley Stanley, Tobias Grey, and Brice Goodshield all scored four points.
The Raiders and Cougars met each other in game two. Monument Valley took a 10-5 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 25-13 at halftime.
Whitehorse came on in the third, cutting the lead to 34-31. The Raiders continued to battle in the fourth quarter, pulling ahead for an impressive 45-40 comeback win.
Whitehorse was again led by Phillips who had 27 points. Adam Joe scored six points in the win. Dance, Black, Kaleb Joe, and Elam Etsitty all scored three points for the Raiders.
Monument Valley was led by Braxton Goodshield with 11 points, Hicks score nine and Brice Goodshield scored eight. Shortman had six points while Cly and Stanley each had three points.
Both teams suffered losses in their final games of the tournament on December 2. Monument Valley lost a close one to Dulce, NM 29-24.
Cly led the Cougars with nine points, Braxton Goodshield scored eight, and Hicks scored four. Shortman scored two points while Grey scored one.
Whitehorse lost to Shiprock 80-44 in their closing game of the weekend. Phillips led with 18 points while Dance scored 12.
Larenz Tsosie, Kalin Tohonnie, and Danathen Lansing all had three points. Adam Joe scored two and Elam Etsitty scored one.
Whitehorse opens the 1A Preview against Maeser Prep at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, December 8 while Monument Valley plays Piute at 8:30.
The Cougars face Milford at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 9. The Raiders take on Valley immediately following. All four games are on Redrock 92 Radio and streamutah.live.
