The Monticello High School track and field team traveled to Roosevelt, UT on Saturday, March 30 for the 2024 Strata Invitational at Union High School.
The Buckaroos were a bit shorthanded due to the Easter break, but the girls still mustered 34 points to finish sixth out of nine teams and the boys scored nine points to finish eighth. The teams combined for 43 points and a seventh-place finish.
Kyleigh Adair came home with the best individual finish for the team with her runner up effort in the shot put. She got a nice distance of 29 feet, .5 inch in the event final.
The boys 4x100 relay team of Chandler Henderson, Tavon Black, Carter Rogers, and Caleb Coleman came home second with a time of 47.34.
The boys sprint medley team was third with a time of 4:10.91. That group included Tavon Black, Robert Morrison, Soren Welch, and Jesse Pettit.
Morrison was also third in the long jump with a jump of 20 feet, one inch. Tavon Black was fifth in the boys 100-meter dash, crossing the line in 11.68 seconds.
Three Buckaroos took fifth, seventh, and eighth in the 200 meter to score points. Robert Morrison got fifth in 24.13, Carter Rogers was seventh in 24.79, and Tavon Black was eighth with a 24.96.
Soren Welch was sixth for Monticello in the boys 400 meter with a time of 54.72 and Madi Adair finished eighth in the girls discus with a throw of 79-5.0.
Interestingly, though the Buckaroos didn’t take the Easter break off, they are off this week. The team will host the annual Blue Mountain Invitational on Saturday, April 13 with Grand County, Green River, Monument Valley, San Juan, and Whitehorse all expected to attend.
