San Juan volleyball team goes 1-2 on road, looks to build momentum headed into state
The San Juan volleyball team hit the road for three games this past week, beginning with rival Grand County on Wednesday, October 13. The Broncos came out strong to take the first set 25-17 but dropped the next three in a row.
Despite the tough 3-1 loss, Bailey Brown led the way with ten kills on the night. Macy Jacobsen was credited with two blocks and Jaci Su’esu’e and Brown each had one apiece.
Friday night, October 15 the Broncos traveled to Parowan to take on the Rams. San Juan played well, taking the match in four sets thanks to smooth serve receptions that set up their offense.
Brown led in assists for kills with 17 followed by Avina Cordova with 13. Cordova also led the team in digs with ten. Both Maycee Conway and Kaeahliyah Howard served 100 percent on the night. Kinley Noyes led the team in kills with nine followed by Su’esu’e and Jacobsen with eight each.
The Broncos stayed overnight on the west side of the state to take on Enterprise Saturday, October 16. Starting San Juan off on a high note, with a perfect serve reception from Howard, Noyes got a great assist from Cordova for a decisive kill.
Brown put the next one down on a gimme. Howard killed into the block. Jacobsen denied the tip in the middle. Howard served an ace to help San Juan take the first set 25-18.
Cordova had a beautiful ace serving from one corner to the next, but the Wolves took the second and third sets 25-22 and 25-12.
The tired but determined Broncos came out strong in the fourth. Su’esu’e had a nice kill in the middle off a touch from the block followed by a great block to deny the Enterprise offense.
San Juan had a hard time digging senior Enterprise middle hitter Noah Moyle who had 19 kills on the night. Su’esu’e blocked BrynLey Huber to tie the game at 23-all. She also blocked a tip in the middle to give the Broncos their first attempt at game point.
But Huber sent down a kill to tie it up again at 24. Senior Corrie Williams pushed it to the corner to bring the Wolves to game point, and the home team was ultimately victorious in the fourth set 26-24.
The Broncos head into the final week of the regular season with a 7-17 record. They closed out their regular season in Kanab Tuesday, October 19. They’ll also be on the road to begin the 2A state tournament this Saturday, October 23.
