San Juan girls tennis gets fall season started
The 2024 San Juan High School girls tennis team is more than halfway through the season.
Since they suffered a 5-0 season-opening loss at South Sevier on August 29 the team has won matches in all three of its most recent contests.
That very same day the team traveled just ten miles up the road to Richfield where they faced Millard.
Though they suffered losses in all their singles matches, they won all their doubles matches. In first doubles, seniors Shayli Bake and Amelia McFarland defeated Kreashia Stevens and Emma Robison 7-6 (7-3) in set one and 7-5 in set two.
In second doubles it was seniors Emily Pugh and Markie Bowers over Tylie Bond and Jaelyn Taylor 6-0 and 6-2. And in third doubles, sophomores Marley Decker and Sariah Sweeten topped Brandee Chapman and Toree Stevens with a 6-0 win in the first set and a 6-2 win in the third.
Despite the wins the Lady Broncos fell 3-2 in the match. This past Thursday, September 5 San Juan again faced two opponents in two locations. They began in Blanding against Gunnison Valley, where they fell 4-1. Bake and McFarland were the only victors against the Lady Bulldogs, winning their first doubles match 8-3 over Alaina Lambert and Paige Peterson. Then the team headed to Moab to take on the rival Grand County Lady Red Devils. Senior Claire Warner picked up a nice win over junior Adalye Ross in third singles play, 6-4 and 6-0.
Pugh and Bowers won their second doubles match over Rosalee Thomas and Holly Hazlett. The duo lost the first set but rallied for 6-0 and 6-2 wins in the second and third.
The team battled hard but lost the match 3-2. This Friday and Saturday, September 13-14 San Juan is heading to Mt. Pleasant, UT where they’ll compete in the Central Utah Invitational. They’ll close out the regular season at Gunnison on September 17 and at home against Grand County on September 19.
